Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Glasgow MT

.KEY MESSAGES...

- Seasonably cold temperatures through tonight, then much warmer
  tomorrow.

- Confidence is increasing for strong winds late this week.

- Unsettled weather this week, with chances for light rain and
  snow beginning Monday night.

&&

.DISCUSSION...

WEATHER PATTERN OVERVIEW:
An active and dynamic week is in store for the entire region.

Tomorrow, high pressure builds off the coast of Baja California
giving way for a series of shortwave disturbances. As the upper
level flow pattern becomes increasingly more zonal and winds aloft
begin to increase, we`re going to see much warmer temperatures
and the start of persistent gusty west winds. An influx of Pacific
moisture tomorrow night bring chances for rain and snow, with
little or no accumulation.

Rain and snow chances return by Tuesday night into Wednesday as a
clipper system moves through the area. Total snow accumulation
looks to stay less than an inch. Models are beginning to have
more agreement on quick moving, potent shortwaves beginning
Wednesday night, which is expected to tighten up the pressure
gradient. The lack of snow cover will aid in mixing down chinook
winds. The strongest winds are favored to be Thursday in Phillips
county, where a majority of ensemble members and NBM probabilities
indicate potential for high winds (sustained and/or gusts). Trends
over the next couple of days will determine whether this threat area
is expanded in space or time.

Heading into next weekend, drier and at least somewhat colder air
moves into the region with a degree of troughing and a backdoor
cold front moving in from the northeast.

FORECAST CONFIDENCE & DEVIATIONS:
Stayed close to the base forecast, with confidence being high in a
warmer than normal and active pattern for the next few days. There
is already moderate confidence for a high wind event for Phillips
county on Thursday. Then, confidence in temperatures next weekend
is low with the area being on the gradient of an Arctic airmass
to the northeast.
